Jennifer’s first introduction to art was through music, but her first passion was drawing and painting. She explored formal training through junior and senior high school and attended the Emily Carr summer intensive foundation program. Jennifer went on to get her degree at Simon Fraser University at the School for Contemporary Arts, majoring in dance. In 2000, with a desire to get back to visual art, she enrolled in the graphic design program at Vancouver Community College while at the same time started to take more art classes through such places as the Federation of Canadian Artists (which she is now an active status member) and through her own private study.
“I love art. Be it visual art, dance or music, I love them all and have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore most of them through my schooling. Although I would consider myself largely self-taught as a visual artist, I have studied drawing, painting and colour theory with a variety of instructors. I find exploring my individual style, in both acrylic and pastel, an exciting and exasperating challenge. Each time, the process is filled with new information and discoveries, which keeps me wanting to learn more. Landscapes seem to be emerging as a theme in my drawings and paintings. I find the subject to be endless source of inspiration. I admired the work of Gordon Smith, Takao Tanabe and Tom Thomson to name a few. The freedom of expression in their work through unique colour choices, bold and spontaneous gestures, and the ability to evoke such emotion from their subjects through painting awes me. Now with my mind and my heart focused on a visual art career, I am looking forward to continuing to improve my skills and knowledge of art, challenging my creative approach and sharing my work with others."
