Camille Sleeman As a landscape painter with leanings toward abstraction, I strive to build connections between the elements of nature and the primitive sensations that attract us to it. Through my understanding of nature and the pictorial forms found within it, I wish to impart a sense of size, weight, location and presence to the elements within my paintings, in order to evoke a sense of familiarity with, or recognition of the landscape, without revealing an exact location to the viewer. I have worked in the field of landscape architecture for the past 20 years, on large-scale residential and commercial projects, as well as school and urban park projects. I have always been fascinated to discover how we interact with our environment, I became a full time painter in 2007, and my work is shown at the East Side Culture Crawl, Artists in Our Midst, and Arts Off Main. Upcoming shows include the Jericho Arts Centre and “Exquisite Landscape”, at the Cityscape Gallery in North Vancouver. Lori Motokato Lori Motokado is a Japanese Canadian watercolour painter with over 35 years of painting experience. Formally instructed in oils, she switched mediums to watercolour paints. She is self taught in watercolour painting, and through exploration has developed her own uniquely detailed and thoughtful approach to the medium. Free of traditional watercolour approaches, and with diligent experimentation, Lori has developed her own uniquely detailed, illustrative style and approach to the medium. Drawing from her academic background (BA in History, Certificate in Liberal Arts, and a Certificate in Architectural Drafting), she is attracted to subjects with history, and character. Each painting reflects her appreciation of the colours, textures, shadows, rust, scratches and dents that defines their respective rich narratives. Her paintings are visual vignettes, revealing the complex and hidden intimate stories of everyday objects that surround her. Her subjects range from antique boats, cars, and toys to florals and animals. Lori is an active member of the Canadian Federation of Artists, and has exhibited in various galleries (Place Des Arts Gallery, The Hope Gallery, The Port Moody Blackberry Art Centre, and the Centre A Gallery in Vancouver), local art events (Vancouver Eastside Culture Crawl, 2013 Harmony Festival to name a few) and has been juried into the North Vancouver Community Art Gallery rental program and into several Federation Gallery shows. Nancy Eng, the jeweler, will showcase her work at Arts Off Main gallery this Sunday, August 11. Stop by and enjoy her beautiful jewelry!
Artist Statement My art practice embraces my daily life, my home, my backyard, my neighborhood. I love following a visual story as it unfolds before my eyes, and I love to paint my stories using a modern vocabulary, emphasizing simplicity and clarity. I mostly use watermedia, but at certain times when the subject matter calls for it I switch to oils. http://annamariaart.blogspot.com/ http://www.etsy.com/shop/annamariapotamiti During sunny summer weekends between July and September, Arts Off Main will once again be hosting "Boulevard Days". Artists from all mediums are invited to participate in one day event by showcasing their work outside the gallery. Each Boulevard day may feature one or more artists and some of the artists will be giving live demonstrations of their creative process. Be sure to check the website for dates and featured artists. Then stop by and join the fun. The artist of Saturday, July 6, is Celia Brauer: Would you like a venue to show and sell your work in the Main Street
neighbourhood? Are you interested in joining a friendly group of artists? Is your work highly marketable and interesting? Then we want you! Arts Off Main gallery is currently seeking submissions for a new artist/partner. We are a group of nine partner artists responsible for the running of the gallery. Each partner has a designated area in the gallery for showing their work and is free to select and display whatever they choose. We take turns staffing the gallery, about 2-3 full days per month each. There is a minimal monthly rent to pay for a convenient Main Street location and a buy-in cost in exchange for 100% of the sale of your work. We are looking for someone who works well with others and has a collaborative approach. Monthly meetings at the gallery allow us to catch up with each other and make collective decisions on the gallery's operations. We also use email to discuss a lot of topics. Our aims are to offer reasonably priced, good quality artwork and gifts as well as to participate in the community. We've raised donations for the Vancouver Food Bank for years and joined in Main Street merchants association activities. Application Process
Interview Artists whose work is approved by the partnership will be invited to bring in some of their work and meet with the Partnership Committee. This will give the gallery a chance to see the actual work and for the artist to meet some of the members and ask any questions they may have. A few facts:
work! Artist Statement I am completely inspired by the natural world. Beauty is everywhere. It is the growth of the forest, the depth of the sea, and the curve of the bone. It is skin, scales, bark, and tide pool ripples. It is texture, and it is raw. I am a translator of life, and I am compelled to narrate it. As an explorer and world traveler, I have lived both at sea and in the forest. My curiosity has led to compassion for all living things, and my degree in Biology has provided concrete evidence for respecting our planet and striving for conservation. Biological and environmental themes are a constant presence in my work. By choosing animate beings as my subject matter I authenticate their existence, beauty, and importance. Everything I paint is rooted in biology: harmonious palettes reflect the vibrant earth, anatomical accuracies define organic shape, and intricate details resonate complex cellular life. I am also fascinated by the overlay between myth, dream, intuition, and reality, and use the translucency of watercolour to explore these connections. Organic objects, rich with dimension, provide ideal subject matter for this investigation. My use of iridescence, which challenges the division between subject and environment, is currently producing ethereal paintings that are deliciously captivating. I am constantly in motion and exploration; my work shares my movement and curiosity. Drawing from the subconscious, and filtered through the biological, I continue to investigate our beautiful Earth. www.tamaraphillips.ca Lüt Boutique - Arts Off Main Gallery Show will be held at Lüt Boutique 4219 Main Street from May 17 to August 16, 2013, the very first collabrative event between Lüt Boutique and AOM, showcasing the AOM local artists' artwork in the vibrant Main Street district. Sean Karemaker moved to Vancouver 6 years ago to work in the video game industry, what he found outside the offices on the streets of Vancouver became far more interesting to him. He began to work on a series of single panel comics about his experience-observing people in Vancouver. Sean called the comics Astronaut Journal. Over time the comics evolved into full size graphic novels, the work became popular in the underground comics scene and began to attract the attention of galleries. Sean’s work continues to evolve and change. Surreal imagery and compositions are used along with common, recognizable events and emotions of the human experience the effect is meant to be disarmingly personal. Sean Has recently been focused on large story based compositions that express love and love lost, A fear of growing old and feelings of Nostalgia based on his experiences of living in Vancouver. Sean has exhibited at The Pendulum Gallery, The Gam, Gallery , Gropps Gallery among others. There are upcoming shows at the Seymour Art gallery, and the Aiden Gallery. Sean Has recently started doing volunteer based teaching. On a recent trip to Celaya, Mexico he taught A group of over 100 kids living in a orphanage along with Mexican and American artists. us. We look forward to reviewing your work! Deadline for applications: Sunday, March 31, 2013 Bio I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mount Allison University in 2008 and my Postgraduate Certificate in Web Design from Sheridan College in 2009. I worked as a designer in Toronto until 2010, when I relocated to Vancouver to begin a new artistic practice. Artist Statement My work explores the processes of deconstruction and assemblage. The works are created by repurposing various traditional and digital creative techniques. My experience as both a commercial graphic designer and traditional artist allows for technical combinations that are unique, heavily layered, and intriguing. I engage modern imaging techniques to prepare subject matter. Source photos are slightly altered in Photoshop to create subtle effects, distortions and colour combinations. Using a series of expressive and uninhibited paint, collage and texture applications, I create a loose and abstract structure upon which to assemble detailed ink drawings. I selectively interpret and reworks various layers until they are harmoniously integrated. Old halftone printing techniques are recreated with stencilled dots of acrylic paint, emphasizing the use of various techniques. Ultimately, the most satisfying component of my work is the manipulation of various materials and layers until they reach that special moment of completion that balances expression, representation, abstraction and detail. www.jonshawpaintings.com |
