                          Dorothy Doherty

I was born in Vancouver, BC, and am pleased to say that although I’ve lived in various parts of the province, I’m happy to be living in Vancouver again. I am stimulated and inspired by the surrounding landscape, especially the mountains, the forest and the sea. Life has taken a few twists and turns, but each time I find a way to connect with art, whether it’s making art, studying art, or teaching art. I feel equally at home with a variety of media, and find it difficult to settle on one material as a medium of expression.

I have been making art most of my adult life – first as a student at art school (VSA) and then as a potter teaching in a northern college. Later, I studied global movements in the history of art, obtaining an MA (UVic) in 1993. After attending SFU (PDP) I worked for 15 years as an art specialist in the public school system. Retirement brought me full circle, and I am now back at university (Capilano U) studying art again – this time learning how art has changed over the years, and where I fit into the picture.

I am interested in the environment and the effect that humans have on the earth. I hope to express my feelings around this topic in my work, tempered with my appreciation for the beauty of life on this exquisite planet.
