Joan Tayler
I have worked in various art media and as a graphic designer but I fell in love with polymer clay because of its versatility. My favorite patterns are greatly influenced by the eight years I spent in Japan. I love gardening and doing botanical water colours so my work often has a botanical theme. I started doing polymer clay with children, making one-twelfth scale models. When I saw Nan Roche's book, The New Clay, I was hooked. I made my first millefiore canes to cover my series of horse sculptures. My friends wanted to wear my work, so I began making jewelry. I love making things that are both decorative and useful, so I developed ways to make barrettes, whistles, zipper pulls and other accessories. Working in a collaborative gallery is a welcomed opportunity for artists who work in isolation and I treasure my involvement with Arts Off Main. www.joantayler.com
