Our 8th Anniversary celebration is next weekend, December 2, 3 and 4. Enjoy cookies and hot, apple cider while browsing our wonderful selection of locally crafted jewellery, pottery, sculpture, gift items, art cards and original art.
10% of all sales during our anniversary celebration weekend will be donated to the Vancouver Food Bank. We'll be busy decorating our storefront this week in preparation for the "Flake Out on Main Street" shop decorating contest. Main Street merchants have taken up the challenge to produce an original storefront display on the theme of "Flake Out on Main Street". You can vote for your favourite display and by voting, your name is entered in a draw for a gift basket of Main Street merchant goodies. Come into Arts Off Main gallery to vote and don't forget to bring a non-perishable food item for the Vancouver Food Bank! Get crawling! Canada's largest open studio event is being held this weekend and you're invited to explore artists studios, meet the artist and get inspired! Arts Off Main artists Ellen Scobie and Joan Tayler have their studios open to the public.
Map to Ellen's studio Map to Joan's studio Everyone welcome! Overcast skies didn't keep you away - on a usually quiet Sunday afternoon, 110 people came by Arts Off Main to check out the Culture Days happenings. Sabine Simons drew a real crowd interested in the technical aspects of this ancient art form - using pigments mixed with wax as a painting medium. For those of you who saw Sabine at work that would like to see some finished pieces, she has three new works, about 8x8 inches each, hanging in the gallery. Lovely, Sabine! Drift artist Penny Lim and Arts Off Main artist Eileen Mosca get Penny's table ready for making art books with the kids. Thanks, Penny, for your energy and ideas and Eileen for the display of artwork on the gallery's outside wall! Arts Off Main consignee and Drift artist Julie McIntyre led a community paper quilt project at Urban Source. Twelve participants who happened by the store joined in the making of this collective creative endeavour. Afterwards, Julie sewed the individual squares together - thank you, Julie, for your creativity, enthusiasm and dedication! Julie has a great photo of this collective effort on her Facebook page. Drift artist Varouj Gumuchian also participated in Culture Days at Arts Off Main with a sculptural installation - sorry, no pictures! Thank you, Varouj! Thank You... for making Culture Days 2011 a success! Canadians throughout the country expressed their creativity by participating in over 5,500 activities in 800 cities and towns over the Culture Days 2011 Event Weekend (September 30, October 1 & 2). Chat with the artists as we perform demos and paint on location. Company B will be on stage at Panorama Park, adjacent to the gallery. SEYMOUR ART FESTIVAL Arts Off Main is appearing during the Seymour Art Festival, a biennial special event hosted by the Seymour Art Gallery, in the Deep Cove Cultural Centre. June 7 - July 3, 2011. Boulevard Days are here again! As we head into summer, Arts Off Main will once again be hosting Boulevard Days, an opportunity for local artists to exhibit their work on the boulevard in front of the gallery. This is a great opportunity to show your work to new audiences in the Main Street area and catch a few rays at the same time!
You may have up to 20 feet of wall space and an 8-foot table, chairs and a tent. If two people are exhibiting that day, you will need to share that same space and you can bring your own table, chairs and a tent, if you wish. Your only job is to keep an eye on all the work outside so that it doesn't "walk" away. We have more flexibility with what we show on the boulevard because we don't have the same space restrictions as in the shop, so we can try new possibilities. You never know what you will get on a weekend day, though Saturdays always seem busier. You are welcome to do demos, play guitar, paint at your easel, bring your dog -- just about anything goes that will draw the crowds and isn't scandalous! All sales of artwork shown on the boulevard will be handled by the gallery inside. Arts Off Main will charge a 25% commission. We have Interact, VISA, MasterCard and a float to facilitate any sales. All contacts and future commissions you make remain your own unless you'd like us to process the sale. The bottom line is that it doesn't cost anything to try except time and prayers to the sun gods. For further information or to book a time, please send a link to your website or JPGs of your work to: Nicola Morgan nickymorgan@shaw.ca We've switched up the walls at Arts Off Main -- lots of new art and new cards in stock. Riitta Peirone is working on a new series of paintings called "Passages" seen here. Some pieces are too large for the gallery but see them on-line.
With the down turn in the economy, even more families are finding it hard to make ends meet. The winter months are especially hard and it’s more important than ever that we extend a helping hand to our neighbours. Most people who receive food from the Vancouver Food Bank Society are working poor – folks who work hard but just can’t make their paychecks stretch far enough; and over 40% of the Food Bank’s clients are children. We at Arts Off Main are trying to do our bit by donating 10% of all sales from February 9th to 14th to the Vancouver Food Bank Society.
You can also help in our quest to feed the hungry by dropping by Arts off Main with a donation of non-perishable food; buy some Valentine’s cookies or make a cash donation. Of course you could always buy some art, too! Every dollar that goes to the Food Bank translates into $3.00 worth of buying power at the wholesalers so they can buy fresh vegetables and perishable food. We hope that you can help us make this event a huge success. |
